Respiratory season is underway, and state and national officials have said they expect to see increases in flu, RSV and COVID-19 cases as we move into the fall and winter months.
To help the community combat this triple threat, the North Central District Health Department have all the updated vaccines available at the Henry, Shelby, Spencer and Trimble county health departments.
Flu shots are available at all NCDHD locations, including the high dose vaccine for those 65 and older.
RSV vaccines are also available, but are only recommended for pregnant mothers, infants going through their first respiratory illness season and adults ages 60-and-older. Adults should talk to their healthcare provider to see if they recommend an RSV vaccine.
Much like the yearly flu vaccine, the 2024-25 COVID-19 vaccine targets the newest variants. Along with providing protection from the most current strains, the COVID vaccine also helps prevent severe cases and long-haul COVID.
Updated COVID-19 vaccines are free to most adults at no cost through private health insurance, Medicaid and Medicare. To help serve those that are uninsured or underinsured, the North Central District Health Department is part of the Adult Vaccine Program, which helps provide free vaccines for qualifying adults ages 19-and-older with an administrative fee. COVID and flu vaccines are recommended for everyone ages 6 months and older and are available at all NCDHD clinics.
The North Central District Health Department follows CDC and Kentucky Department of Public Health guidelines, which recommend COVID-19, flu and RSV vaccines for everyone eligible.
“With the steady increase in cases, now is the time to get your shot,” said Roanya Rice, NCDHD director. “The vaccine can reduce the chances getting COVID and prevent severe illness and death.”
The North Central District Health Department has all vaccines now and is currently accepting appointments daily and appointments for an extended hours event from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 9 at the Henry, Shelby, Spencer and Trimble county health departments. If you have trouble getting to the Oct. 9 event, NCDHD will host another flu-only vaccine event on Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Shelby County Health Department. To make an appointment for the Oct. 26 flu vaccine event, visit www.NCDHD.com or call your local health department.
Flu, COVID and RSV vaccines are also available at all four clinics during normal open hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to noon on Friday. Call your local clinic to set up an appointment.
Officials have noted that it is safe to get your flu, COVID and, if needed, RSV shots at the same time. However, if you can get your RSV vaccine on a separate day it is recommended to do them at different times.
“We are happy to make multiple appointments for people to fill their vaccine needs,” Rice said.
